When reading Clifford Levy's article, My Family’s Experiment in Extreme Schooling, I could not help but feel terrified for the children. It seemed almost negligent to put your children in a foreign school without any prior preparation.
In the end it was very inspring how his children persevered. What they were able to achieve was not miraculous, but by our standards today it sure seems like it. Many children overcome language barriers everyday in every country. But this was a special case, becasue this was a well off family that could afford to send their children to a private school. Very different from refugees fleeing some wore torn country with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
But I wonder, is money the key to a decent education abroad? Obviously immigrant children US do make it, but how many are slipping through the cracks?
I think we could learn a lot from taking these progressive approaches that Bogin has put in place, as opposed to the test score-driven bureaucracy we have instead. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked from today's youth if you only thought to challenge them to think.
